Kenro Izu
Territories of the soul
“When I first visited Egypt in 1979, I photographed a few world famous sites. Back in New York, I was especially captivated by one photograph, which succeeded in capturing the strong aura of spirituality of the place: that was the image of the Step Pyramid in Sakkara. The stones forming the pyramid seemed to exude glowing light from inside. Since then, stone sacred architecture became my favourite topic. I started researching places imbued with spiritual energy and started visiting these places one by one in order to photograph them: it was as though one site naturally led me to the next, very spontaneously, as though the ‘sacred spirit’ were guiding me place after place to invite me reflect deeply on the essence of spirituality.” (Kenro Izu)
Conceived as a retrospective, the exhibition illustrates Kenro Izu’s refined artistic research and the work that for over thirty years he has been carrying out, like a tireless pilgrim, in the world’s most evocative holy sites: from the Egyptian pyramids and the ancient stones of Stonehenge to the site of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, from Buddhist temples in India and Indonesia to the Syrian desert and Tibetan peaks.
